How to Measure Your Dog for a Harness: A Practical Fit Guide

Choosing a dog harness starts with your dog's measurements and the size chart for the exact harness you want to buy. A medium in one design can fit differently from a medium in another, so use your current harness size as a reference rather than a guarantee.

This guide helps you collect the right information before ordering and check the fit before your first walk.

Start with the harness's own size guide

Open the product's measuring instructions before you reach for the tape. Different designs can use different measuring points. Some ask for chest and neck measurements; others also use body length. Follow the diagram for that model rather than borrowing a chart from another brand.

You will need a flexible tape measure, somewhere quiet for your dog to stand naturally, and a place to record the results. If you use string instead, mark the measurement and lay it flat against a ruler without stretching it.

Measure carefully and record the units

  1. Chest: where the manufacturer's guide asks for chest girth, measure around the indicated part of the rib cage, usually its widest section behind the front legs. Keep the tape level and avoid pulling it tight.
  2. Neck: measure at the point shown in that harness's diagram. A harness opening does not necessarily sit where a normal collar sits.
  3. Other measurements: record any additional dimensions requested by the manufacturer. Repeat each measurement to check you get a similar result.

Write down centimetres or inches beside every number. A simple note containing the date, chest, neck and chosen model makes it easier to compare options or ask for help.

What if your dog falls between sizes?

Compare every required measurement with the chart. Do not automatically size up: a larger harness may leave another area too loose. Check whether the manufacturer gives specific advice for overlapping ranges. If the chart is unclear or the neck and chest point to different sizes, ask for guidance before ordering.

Check movement as well as the standing fit

Introduce the harness gradually and adjust it according to its instructions. Watch your dog take a few relaxed steps in a secure space. Look for straps shifting out of position, rubbing behind the front legs or restricting normal movement. Check that fastenings are secure and the lead attaches to the designated point.

Dogs Trust recommends a comfortable, stable fit and a gradual introduction to wearing a harness. Its harness training guide explains how to help your dog become comfortable with the equipment.

Keep the measurements useful

Recheck the fit as your dog grows or changes shape, and after adjusting the straps or adding a coat beneath the harness. A saved measurement is a starting point, not a permanent size label.
